Working Collectively To Preserve The Culture
Malcolm X College holds a longstanding tradition of hosting all seven days of Kwanzaa, uplifting community, culture, and the principles that guide the holiday. This year, each day is led by organizations dedicated to preserving and celebrating African Diasporic traditions. Chi-Village, alongside the Consulate General of the Republic of Haiti in Chicago, Betty Shabazz International Charter School, Metropolitan Board of the Chicago Urban League and Liberated Arts Movement, and Artist Talks Culture and Collabs, will co-produce a day at the celebration.
Come out for the Ujamaa celebration on Monday, December 29th, from 12:00 PM to 4:00 PM.
This Kwanzaa celebration is centered on the enduring power of community, collaboration, and intergenerational relationships. We continue to stand proudly in our cultural identity as we build and maintain our institutions within the community. This year, we come together to reflect on the living legacy of our elders and the work of our ancestors as we bloom together, grow together, plant new seeds together, and uplift the culture with intention, creativity, and love.
Together, we recommit to cultural preservation, economic empowerment, and the elevation of individual and collective consciousness as we work to sustain and strengthen our village for generations to come.
"It is our responsibility to preserve the cultural integrity of Kwanzaa against anyone or anything that seeks to undermine it. Because that is the legacy that we've inherited, and that's our responsibility."
- Baba Hannibal Afrik

Light The Village: Kinara Collective Bid

Created by Chicago-based floral artist John Caleb Pendleton, owner of Planks & Pistils, the piece reimagines Kwanzaa tradition through natural materials that honor both the African diaspora and the Black Southern experience.
